Alicia Grant’s piano pieces tend toward a recurring theme, that of the imagery of water, explored, for example, in previous works Surreal Sailing, Water Shadow, and Cross Currents. In Voice Adrift, dedicated to Panos Karan, the music suggests a state of drifting on a sea or ocean. A sorrowful voice (the melodic subject of the piece) floats on an undulating current (represented by a constant flow of eighth notes). The isolate singing of this voice is heard throughout the piece as the music swells and subsides, as if surrendered to the majesty of a vast ocean.
Premiered by Greek pianist Panos Karan in 2009 at the Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall, New York. Recorded by French pianist Jeremy Eskenazi for Divine Art Records, as part of his Rainlight: Evocations of Water for Piano Solo album.
