This epic piece is based on the idea of ‘weaving threads’ of melody. In the opening bars, the listener is introduced to a dreamy and flowing melodic line that represents the first ‘thread’ of the musical fabric. A second lyrical melody, derived from the first, is then interlaced into the texture. Before long, a third melodic line intermingles with the other threads of music, and tension builds. As the activity increases, more detached, rhythmic gestures begin to pervade the music, sewing, as it were, a different texture. In this spinning of a new musical fabric, the threads intertwine to the point of entanglement. What follows is a kind of unravelling. The development of the various threads of music is retraced, but in a distorted, uneasy fashion above a low, ever-present pedal note retained from the climax.
